Backyard jungle HNT

I like our back porch. Being out of sight of the road makes it very useful, as does the plastic roofing above. I can leave items on it for Freecyclers to collect; we keep our recycling bin on there by the back door; and there are gumboots and an ashtray for my brother and a couple of chairs.

There are also steps. There are three of them from the path up to the porch, and the middle one always clonks alarmingly when you step on it. Unlike our front steps, which no one uses, our porch steps are (comparatively) stable – no one’s been flung off them yet!

The best part of our porch, though, is being able to sit at the top of the steps. Sometimes I go out there with my morning cup of tea and relax there, looking out at the back-yard jungle and the washing line, and watch our cats and those of the neighbourhood intensely involved in cat chess, but nonetheless occasionally deigning to visit me and smooch against my legs.


It’s also a great spot to read (I love finding reading spots!). There is a gate that’s perpetually open, so I lean against the edge of the gate-post and lose myself in another world while mine continues on, sunnily, around me.

It’s even, very occasionally, a spot for making out. Or for one person to sit below the other and have their shoulders rubbed. Or for two people to lean together and enjoy the morning sunshine and their cups of tea together.

It makes me smile.
