Mr. Strong

When I saw the shelf of Mr. Men and Little Miss mugs in the store, I made a noise that sounded just like ‘squee!’ (Hylas was with me – he’ll substantiate this). Because who doesn’t love the Roger Hargreaves series of characters? I grew up with a pillowcase sporting Mr Lazy and Mr Greedy, reading the books, and generally being unable to decide which character suited me best – surely it’s more fun to have a variety of them?
Anyhow. When I saw the shelf, I knew immediately that I wanted to get one for Apollo. It took a few minutes to make up my mind (there were a lot to choose from!), but ultimately there was one which just felt right.
Once I’d purchased it, it lay in wait, wrapped, hidden in a bag under my side of the bed. And one Saturday morning, just because, I gave it to him. Did it need a reason? Not really. I gave it to him because I love him, and random presents are fun, and I really do think he is.
For over eight years he’s been my strength, my support, and my firm rock. He makes me tea, reads my writing, kisses me goodbye every morning before he goes to work, even though 90% of the time I’m fast asleep and don’t remember. He watches Lost and Fringe and Dr. Who with me, and lies in bed in the dark discussing theories and notions about them.
He is inevitably amused at the large selection of kinky toys in the play room, and rather pleased I don’t want to use them with him.
He natters on chat with me, every day.
He gets on so well with my other loves. Introduces them to anime, talks geekery with them, gangs up with them to tease the shit out of me, and sometimes, wonderfully, loves them himself.
He loves me, loves my brother, loves our cats (er, not in the same sense as the previous paragraph). He puts the rubbish out every Wednesday, and feels guilty when he’s seen I’ve tidied something up, so does some too. He helps me when I break my website.
We make the bed together.
He quoted Buffy to me when he spokes his vows for our civil union. (Can you guess what it was he quoted?)
He plays computer games next to me while I write my blog posts. He shares funny things in his RSS reader (and sometimes I know they’re just for me). We can talk about money, and sex, and dramas, and none of it is scary when it’s with him.
That’s just a fraction, a tiny drop, in the ocean of wonderful things he is and does and means.
I have so many loves. But he is my Mr. Strong. My Apollo. My husband.
And besides, it’s a great big mug and makes a great big cup of tea!

Ooooh, I used to love those books! My elementary school psychiatrist had all of them. Apparently they were great for teaching kids things.
Thats such a sweet gift! Mr Strong is indeed the strongest person in the world.

Ha, at first I was like “arh, the lovey dovey!” I am super shy/weird about such things. But you know what? I read the whole thing anyway, and it made me smile for hours. You are so sweet.
