Intriguing Reading #14

My regular roundup of interesting reads, found from all over the place.
On Being Out: “How out are you? What drives that choice? What consequences have you faced? What consequences are you scared of? I think this is an important discussion. Most poly activists are out, out, out. I don’t hear them talking about being in any real trouble because of it. Is it because we who are a bit more public are lucky in our life situations?” (The Polyamorous Misanthrope) Comments are essential reading
Different Strokes For Different Folks: “I write, but don’t introduce myself as a writer. I fight, but don’t call myself a fighter. I talk but I’m not a talker and I walk, but I’m not a walker. Why do you think I would define myself by the role I take in sex? Don’t you see how fucking ridiculous that is? I’m sexually dominant, but I’m not defined by my dominance.” (John Yossarian)
Respect: “The majority of people I know who are in O/p set ups are deeply in love. They have a dynamic that may not make sense to other people but it makes sense to *them.* And they are strong people, self aware people, they are human. And like any other human on this planet we are all here to learn, love and live our lives the way we choose. They have chosen this path for themselves.” (Vanilla Impaired)
Undies: “I investigated more of his undies, and even the cheapest of mens undies come double lined with extra support. OK, I get this because of different anatomies BUT HOLY COW it clicked with me that men’s underwear is ACTUALLY SCIENTIFICALLY DESIGNED FOR SUPPORT AND COOLNESS.” (PickleMeThis)
Their So-Called Journalism, or What I Saw at the Women’s Mags: “I know that there are amazing and talented editors at these magazines who would love to publish an expose on palm oil, or a profile of a 27-year-old breast cancer survivor who doesn’t look like a supermodel. But often their hands are tied—whether by advertisers or the institutional structure or the status quo. I think women who shell out hard-earned money to buy these magazines deserve better. They at least need to know that much of what they’re reading isn’t entirely true.” (Hillary Rosner / Tooth and Claw)
Where the streets have no name: “At this point, we decide to head back to L’Ours Marin to ask for some proper directions. Unfortunately, by the time we get there, everyone has gone somewhere else for dinner. We don’t have phones. We don’t have phone numbers. We are typical men. We have confidently declared that we don’t need help and know exactly what we are doing when in fact we are stuffed. It’s like being stuck inside a giant metaphor for depression, I think, but decide not to share my thinking with Andy, who looks about an inch away from crushing a small child.” (Christopher Banks)
Acceptance of the Self: “Yesterday I was thinking about when it was that I started accepting my own self. It happened in a way that many would may bizarre. Lying in bed one night, after J had drunk a considerable amount of alcohol, he told me, “I love my fat slut.”” (Fae Teardrop)

Most of these articles seem to fall into a “personal growth” sort of sphere this week. They’ve made me ponder…

That wasn’t intentional, Pet. But in looking at these links again, yes, that did happen!
