Public in the Loos

Posted on | January 15, 2012 | 10 Comments |

One thing true of travelling New Zealand (this may be true of the world – I just haven’t travelled enough to be able to comment about other places) is that some public loos are amazing, and some are unutterably gross. And when you find a good one? You mentally note it, and tuck it away for future emergency stops!

I’m surely not the only one who has a mental map of toilet stops worth using, am I?

Otorohanga has positively lovely public toilets. Nice outside, and even pleasanter inside. Which made it perfect for a quick snap for both the Scavenger Hunt and for Sinful Sunday!

What makes for good public toilets? It’s not difficult: clean, lockable, toilet paper, soap, well-lit. It’s still amazing how many councils can’t manage that much, though … So thank you, Otorohanga!

Thank you also to Kiana for taking the photographs!

The observation you note about New Zealand is most definitely true of the United States. Jill also has a mental record of the public restrooms that are better avoided versus those that are generally well-kept. In fact, there are some long road trips we make so frequently that we know where we’d be better off stopping and where we’d do well to skip.

As always, you dazzle us with your boldness and your beauty!

Back in another lifetime, in the country where I come from, we used to drive very long distances and I also knew exactly which rest rooms were good to use. In this country I have never been to a public rest room, except for in shops. Distances driven here are just too short.
In my opinion you light up any public loo!

I indeed have a very detailed cognitive map just for this very sort of thing!! have to say I’ve not seen any roadside ones as nicely decorated as that one though!!
Great job as always, Dee! :)

Would you believe that most truly public toilets have been shut down in this country? It seems to be that shops and restaurants have been expected to take up the slack.

I thought I was the only one who appreciated nice public restrooms! It’s good to know I’m not alone. :)

J&J – It’s good to know that New Zealand isn’t the only place with variable public toilets – and that I’m not the only one to keep a mental map!

Clive – And you brighten up my day, Clive :)

Rebel – I tend to have a variation on my map, of which shops have restrooms they are happy for you to use, too …

Kazi – There are some totally stunning ones here in New Zealand. On our honeymoon Apollo and I made an excuse to visit the public toilets in Kawakawa because they are so gorgeous.

Michael – Oooh. You can come back anytime :)

GeekyNymph – I am rather glad I don’t have to clean public ones …

Molly – Really? That’s appalling! What the heck are rates paid for, then?

Tonya – Looks like you’re definitely not alone in your appreciation!

    Mistress Mia – You’re very welcome :)

    xx Dee
