We have a special guest star in this evening’s images. Click to find him!
I have a huge crush on Tim Minchin. For those of you who are going ‘who the hell is that?’, allow me to enlighten you: Tim Minchin is a comedian musician Australian Londonian with bizarre hair, a penchant for eyeliner, and a whole fuckload of talent. And I have a massive crush on him.
It all began when I watched a youtube video a few years back. It continued as I found more youtubes of various songs. But it really kicked into high gear the middle of last year, when I stumbled across a copy of his DVD ‘So Live‘. Apollo and I watched it together … and proceeded apace to introduce it to each poor sod friend who crossed our threshold. We made more converts.
Late last year I learned about a documentary, called ‘Rock and Roll Nerd‘, which was being shown by the DOCNZ group, to members only. I wasn’t a member – but there was a competition to win tickets, and my fangirly brilliance (or possibly my nerdiness) meant I was a shoe-in. Two tickets were mine! I took Medea with me to see the doco, and we both walked out enthusing. I couldn’t get over seeing his arse in the shower (yum), but it was also enlightening to get the insight into his life and career and rise to comedic stardom.
We’d also been told, at the end of the documentary, that he was planning to come to New Zealand in early 2009 to perform. And I remember, very clearly, what I said to Medea on the way back to the car. “I am totally going to meet him when here’s here. And hug him. And possibly (although it’s not likely) seduce him while I’m at it.”
Well, last week Tim Minchin came to our fair shores, to play four shows. Apollo and I had our tickets to go on the final night. Many of our friends had been on earlier evenings, but we were content to go in each others’ company. As we walked up Queen Street to the Aotea Centre, I was literally jiggling with excitement. “Maybe I should flash him my boobs,” I mused. “Maybe you’ll get kicked out,” he replied, perplexed by my thought patterns but loving me just the same.
The show was brilliant. I twittered beforehand, and in the interval – and I popped out to buy my very own canvas bag. The t-shirt was also irresistible, so was added to the pile of goodies. My friend H had been the previous night, and I knew her canvas bag was a signed one, so I asked the merchandising salesperson if there were any signed ones left to buy, and she informed me that they were sold plain – but that he sometimes came out afterwards and signed for people!
I went back to Apollo in a lather. We were so sticking around after the show for that!
We stood around afterwards for what seemed like an age, unsure if he was coming out or not – it was the last night after all, and he had looked very tired indeed. But after a wait, we were rewarded – he emerged, and the merchandising woman actually pointed him towards us. Eeep!
I managed conversation – he is just lovely in person – and there was indeed huggage. And when he went to sign my canvas bag I said to him (I still can’t believe I did this), “You know, if I had the nerve I’d ask you to sign my boobs.”
He looked up from scribbling on my bag. “Oh, I’ve done that a few times before.”
“Really? So I could ask? It’s okay?” He nodded.
Well. Who turns down that opportunity? I promptly yanked my top up and thrust my chest forward. He flinched a bit, and I realised belatedly that he was probably expecting either for me to pull my top down a little, or for me to be wearing a bra. Still, he recovered well, and signed extravagantly on my left breast.
I was delighted. We had one more hug, and then Apollo and I ambled out into the night, me babbling the whole time. We managed to make it halfway across Aotea Square before it hit me, I hyperventilated, and had to sit down.
It seems that one of my many mantras is absolutely true – if you don’t ask, you don’t get. And I’d gotten very, very well indeed!
Tim Minchin – he totally rocks. Go and see him, listen to him, find his DVD. And get a hug if you get the chance
